Owned by Penny Cary and Hosea Carpenter Kia will always be immortal through the wonderful personality of her kids and grandkids. She was a huge personality and thus a larger than life presence in our home. Comical with a dry wit, talented and creative, firm but fair, she was supremely confident in her place in the world and especially as THE QUEEN of Sasanoa since the day she hurled herself out of her airline crate after her flight from Kansas to Boston and into my arms. She had a true zest for life and her curiosity (nosiness) extended to anyone and everyone who visited her realm. She insisted on having "things" in her bed--she never destroyed them-- and her favorites, were socks and dirty underwear. After those came eyeglass cases, shoes, gloves, and dishrags. She had been known to keep the remote control and the phone safe for the day and more than once I came home to a blaring tv or no dial tone on the phone. Given her intelligence, I am quite sure she had been calling for take out! She was a Borrower, though, and she always replaced things she stole with something of equal or greater value (in her mind at least). Thus my poem was written:"My Bra is Under the Christmas Tree." She allowed us exactly 22 minutes to eat a meal, after which time we were expected to turn the plates over to her for pre-washing. She would rouse from napping every day at exactly 5 p.m. to bark furiously to announce that it was her supper time and we should get our butts in gear. She kept us laughing for just shy of 11 years. She was bright, witty, sly, and the best temperamented dog I have ever met in any breed. Tolerant, calm, and thoughtful, she taught every litter here how to behave. She was a good mother, but her forte was with her grandkids and great grandkids. When the pups turned 6 weeks old, she took over their education. She never let anyone forget that she was the queen and she was to be respected, but she always did so in a non-threatening and fair manner. She accepted client's dogs as well and I could throw her in the back yard with ANY visiting dog. She would give each a quick "put down" accompanied by a furiously wagging tail and then she would lead the games! She never finished in the States due to bone calcification in her hock from a puppy injury. Two handlers asked us if they could have her to show, and, given her huge ego, she probably would have done well except for the shortened hock which affected her gait. She received a standing ovation from Schutzhund spectators at her WAE. She earned her Herding Instinct Title with much praise when I entered her on a whim even though she had never laid eyes on sheep. She literally came off the couch to earn her Rally Novice title at 10 years old and loved every minute and was anticipating strutting her stuff in the veteran's ring. She was our foundation bitch and produced 2 Chs and her daughter went on to produce 5 American Champions thus far. She was vWD affected, but survived 7 major surgeries with no problems, four of them life threatening. She ALWAYS proved the doctors and doom sayers (including me) wrong! Except the last time. She was solidly kicking her daughter's, granddaughter's and great granddaughter's butts (literally, as she had a "kickboxing" style of playfighting,) but she was looking bloated. X-rays the next morning showed massive growths internally and surgery proved out the diagnosis. She had two massive cancerous tumors smothering all her organs. She never had complained. Out of a deep abiding respect for her, we let her go peacefully under anesthesia. I have been told that the vet who performed the procedure cried. I can't help but think that somewhere an angel is missing a pair of wings, and I can hear her name reverberating throughout Heaven...KIIIIAAA!!!!! April 18, 1996-February 2, 2007 Can. Ch.
