SEND us your Sasanoa news.
JANUARY 2010WOWSA! What a way to start the year! Miss Ziva... Sasanoa Media Blitz... finished her American championship at the Greater Lowell Kennel Club show 1/16 in Fitchburg, MA. She won Best of Breed from the Bred By Class over specials for her third major. She also went Best Bred By in Breed. She then went on to WIN the Working Group!! So, she's now a very arrogant CH. Sasanoa Media Blitz! She is her dam's ( Jazz) first champion. DECEMBER 2009 Argos earned another 2 pts by going WD/BOS at the EasternDog Club show in Providence, RI. Frank Barcellos keeps us updated on Max's battle with lymphoma:I got some good news about Max tonight. it had been 2 weeks since his last visit and all of the swelling in his nodes went down ! the ones in his neck look larger but that is probably due to Max having a little too much turkey ( like his owner did ) over the holidays. we will start walking and both start eating right again starting tomorrow. My vet does not want to overdo it with the chemo. for now, Max will continue on his prednisone and he is due for his cytoxin next Monday evening. Max's leg is healing nicely too though he needs to stop chewing on the bandage. lol funny, trying to get a Doberman to stop chewing. Anyway, Max is in good health and spirits and he continues to amaze everyone here with his fight against this horrible disease. Max said "hello" to a pair of Yorkshire Terriers as we were leaving the vet tonight ! always a good sign when Max says HI to other dogs NOVEMBER 2009 Sasanoa dogs and owners had a good time and good luck at the Thanksgiving Cluster in Springfield, MA, 11/19-22. In addition to the annual Sasanoa Thanksgiving dinner, Ziva earned her second major--a 4 pointer; Argos went reserve to a 4-pt major; Maja and Ty earned their Rally Novice title in 3 straight shows with a 1st place the last day; and Zeke and Keara Q'd on Sunday in Excellent Jumpers agility. And our German Pinscher Rumor earned three BOSs and her first 2 points. OCTOBER 2009 From Jack and Pam Scheid: "For the Derry NH Fall Street Fair and PawFest held on September 19, our trainer, Julia McDonough, was asked by the organizers if she would put on two obedience training demonstrations. She agreed, and the Derry DPW actually constructed a large temporary show ring just for the event. She selected 6 of her advanced obedience students and their dogs to perform the demo, all off-lead exercises which was a real crowd pleaser. Pam and I had volunteered to show up and help her in whatever way we could. She jumped on that and told us to bring Maximus to serve as the official Fortunate K9 "greeter" at her booth, the only non-advanced obedience dog representing her training center, and at only 11 months of age. While we were honored she would make such a gesture, we were also a bit intimidated because Maximus' performance would reflect directly on her and the reputation of her business. Working a dog in the training environment is one thing because it is controlled. Doing so in the middle of the chaos that is a public Fair is another. But doing so up close and personal with the constant flow of adult strangers, with children of all ages, with their parents that don't show the common sense of a fruit fly around strange dogs, and with the multitudes of inexperienced dog owners and untrained dogs of every temperament.......you get my drift. But we trust that our trainer, as in the past, is an exceptional judge of dogs (and handlers) and would never let us set Maximus up to fail. She told us to just execute polite meet and greets on our terms (Maximus sitting), to teach the children first the importance of not approaching strange dogs without the owner's permission, to assertively control our space from intruding, ill-mannered dogs and their handlers, and to pace Maximus, reading his cues while providing periodic breaks in the action for him to relax, decompress, veg out, and play away from the crowd. Maximus did not disappoint one iota, even though he is still that willful. confident, fearless, puppy-brained and overly enthusiastic Blue Boy you presented to us last December. At PawFest he was a great ambassador for the importance of obedience training (at a mere 11 months), for our trainer's reputation, and for the breed, shocking quite a few of the Doberman doubters out there. Many folks asked us where we got such a beautiful Doberman, and Maximus represented Sasanoa in a way that would have had Penny Cary blushing with pride. Our trainer, who has witnessed and guided his development these past 9 months, reiterated beforehand that some dogs are food driven, toy driven, work driven, or are praise and affection driven. Maximus gravitates to the latter two. "Make him work for the affection he craves by sitting calmly first. If his ass leaves the ground, immediately withdraw what he wants. Give it back to him only when he earns it and exhibits the correct behavior. This is as much about training as anything you will ever do in class." And then she kept a watchful eye over us. Maximus made everyone look good that day. But the story continues. Pam and I once again volunteered this past weekend to reprise our roles with Maximus as the official greeters at the FortunateK9 booth at the annual Pet Blessing, sponsored by the First Church of Christ in Bradford MA. Again Julia McDonough was asked by the organizers to perform an obedience training demo after the Ma. State Police performed their canine demo. Pam and I arrived, totally comfortable with our role. Then the other shoe dropped. Our trainer came up short with the number of advanced obedience dog/handler teams. "Pam and Maximus, you are going to have to get out there and fill in. What we will explain and demonstrate today are our dogs in various stages of obedience training." Maximus with Pam at the helm once again did not disappoint. Julia introduced Pam and Maximus to the crowd and explained: "In obedience training, Dobermans are strong, willful, high intensity, high energy, high drive, a little too smart for their own good, and require a handler that is equal to the task. Consequently, they tend to develop their obedience skills at a slightly different pace than many other breeds. Maximus here is just 11 months old. You be the judge." Maximus went out with Pam and delivered a solid individual performance, then blended nicely with "the big dogs." While he is not (yet) nearly in the same league with the advanced obedience teams, many of whom are titled, Maximus' age is beginning to now work in his favor. He put on very respectable demo for his first time out in public. His heeling, 90/180/270/360 turns, left and right, German lefts, sits, downs, stays, recall/front sit, and attention on Pam in the chaos and distraction that is a public venue reflected well once again on Pam, our trainer, the breed, and on you (Sasanoa). Julia skipped any off-lead exercises with Maximus to be on the safe side (demo area was a common in the center of town, not fenced off from the busy streets or the crowd with their dogs). Julia also demo'd one of her own Dobermans, but she also took Maximus' leash from Pam and ran him through his paces again for the crowd. Solid again, as you might expect with a professional handler this time" SEPTEMBER 2009 Noa took 3 out of four wins in Cape Cod and Ziva took Bred By Gr. 1 two days. The winning continues: Ziva another point in North Conway and then again on Cape Cod. Noa was out for the first time since July and won 3 out of 4 shows on Cape Cod, picking up 5 points! Frank Barcellos reports that Max has had, hopefully, his last chemo treatment and seems to be doing really well. Continued good wishes for Max and Frank. They are quite a team. Kayla continues to improve in her agility training with Dad Zeke and might be ready to compete next year! Joe Robinson continues to recover from a nasty fall last month. He will be away from the agility ring for awhile, but we hope is recovery is speedy and complete! AUGUST 2009 Ziva went WB for another point at the Cumberland, ME, shows. APRIL 2009 April 25-26 Argos and Paige went to UKC shows in Westfield, MA. Unfortunately, Argos did not get to show as he is sporting approximately 15 stitches on his foreleg from a long tear. But he and Carol enjoyed tagging along in the RV. Paige accumulated 3 WB, 2 BOB, 2 Gr 2 and a RWB. She is half way to her UKC Ch. Joe and Maya earned a standard leg in agility in Wrentham. Carol Crosby and husband Michael participated this weekend in the Regional (NE/NY) archery championships in Andover, MA. Carol placed either 2nd or 3rd in the senior divison. (They left before finals). Michael had fun! LOL! See Carol's winning form below! Congratulations to Maxim Scheid who earned his AKC Puppy Starz certificate after successfully completing his puppy obedience course. Kayla had a joyful reunion with her Specialist Dr. Roberts who is about to begin testing Kayla to determine what might be causing the excessive drinking/urination, which has gotten better. FEBRUARY 2009 THE PARTY THAT WASN'T!!!!! When Mark and Norma scheduled their visit for the weekend of the 6th-8th, we felt they might like to see the Jazz pups as they turned 4 months, so we invited owners to "drop in" during the day on Sat. to get reunited or to meet M & N for the first time. Linda, Joe and Evelyn were coming for lunch and that was the only formal plan in the works. What evolved was something else! By supper time we had 5 pups and their owners in various stages of play and discourse. We ended up with 9 at the table and a good time was had by all! Apologies to the Crosbys and to Dorothy and Gary Robinson who might have been led to think that we had a 'reunion" and they weren't invited. LOL!Pups are all coming along nicely and we are excited about the upcoming show season and on following their progress in other areas. (Pictures are up under JAZZ'S PUPS) Kayla has been off her medication for a week now and does seem to be improving daily. She is SUCH a sweet personality that everyone has fallen for her. Contrary to some expectations (and I understand there is a "pool" being circulated), Mark and Norma did leave with Krickett for some more "fostering." She SO enjoyed her vacation in the southern, sunny climes of Maine. "My beautiful redhead, Fiesta, having earned her WAC less than two weeks before, traveled with me to Rhode Island this weekend to compete in canine musical freestyle at the World Canine Freestyle Organization's 6th Annual International competition. We were competing at the Beginner level to the Fats Domino song, "I'm Walkin'." We also did a Beginner's Pairs routine with my daughter and her French Bulldog to "Meet in the Middle." I'm thrilled to say that both routines earned legs, although she was getting a bit of a glazed look and didn't do as well in the pairs routine. (My daughter also qualified in HER singles routine, so it was great fun all around.) We placed first in Beginner A and also earned the award for Best Teamwork by a Beginner Team. We also, by default since we were the only "A" pairs routine, earned first in that category as well. Animal Planet was there filming all weekend for a two-hour special that will be airing on Dec. 13. I don't know how much Fiesta will be featured. They were particularly in love with my daughter and the Frenchie, (Who wouldn't be, LOL?) with the Landseer Newfoundlands, and a couple of other dogs. But it would be wonderful for the breed if Fiesta got a passing nod...."
